ABOUT US
STAR is a registered charity aiming to provide opportunities in Arts and Recreation for disadvantaged young people in Somerset. They may be in the care of the Local Authority or may be classed as "in need" as defined in the Children Act 1989. STAR also assists young people up to the age of 25 who were formerly in care beyond the age of 16.
Young people are classed as "in need" where:
- They experience disability.
- Their needs for parenting are not met.
- They live in an environment, which may be threatening to their health or development.
- Their circumstances prevent them from experiencing a range of activities and opportunities available to other children of a similar age.
- They are in need of therapeutic support.
- Their behaviour can present significant difficulties.
- They experience discrimination.
Many disadvantaged children and young people typically have lower self esteem, fewer social skills, achieve less at school and are at a higher risk of social exclusion than their contemporaries. By helping to provide access to OPPORTUNITIES we intend to help young people cope with the effects of adversity in their lives.
