STAR aims to provide opportunities through music, sport, arts and youth activities to some of Somerset`s most vulnerable and disadvantage children and young people from 0 to 21 years (25 if a care leaver).

WHO WE SUPPORT & HOW

STAR supports children and young people aged between 0 and 21 (up to 25 if a care leaver) designated as ‘in need’ within Somerset

STAR funds children from 0 years as they understand the importance of babies and toddlers learning through play and social interaction.

STAR understands that when a child is able to participate in activities alongside their peers, their self-esteem is raised, they are happier and able to perform better academically.

YOUNG PEOPLE

STAR understand young people’s need for social interaction and new experiences. To be able to connect and belong: Young people who are given these opportunities are more likely to follow their aspirations, make appropriate choices and are better able to maintain healthy relationships.

CARE LEAVERS

STAR recognises young care leavers often face isolation, poverty and unstable accommodation. By providing care leavers with the funding to enable participation in a chosen activity and/or to purchase essential items, STAR is helping to build resilience and enabling them to overcome the effects of adversity in their lives.

WE SUPPORT THOSE WHO:

  • Are experiencing a dysfunctional lifestyle, and / or living in poverty
  • Have behaviour that can present significant difficulties
  • Are experiencing discrimination
  • Have circumstances that prevent them from experiencing a range of activities and opportunities available to other children and young people of a similar age
  • Are living in an environment that is threatening to their health and development
  • Are in need of therapeutic support
  • Are at risk of offending and criminal behaviour
  • Are in care
  • Are care leavers
  • Have a disability

HOW WE SUPPORT

Examples of activities that STAR will consider providing assistance towards include:

  • Music and art lessons, sports clubs, youth groups, coaching, drama and dance classes
  • Purchase and hire of musical instruments, art and sports equipment
  • Entrance fees where related to a proven interest or pursuit.
  • Resources to support entry to education, training or employment
